How to mass update OCPP parameters

Change the configuration of multiple chargers at once

What is OCPP? Learn about OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol), its purpose, uses, key features, and management benefits in Understanding OCPP: A guide.

This feature is an expert function and should only be executed by trained personnel!

With the feature of mass updating OCPP parameters directly in the vaylens portal, you can now change multiple parameters at once for several chargers. The single charger update option will still be available within the Charge port details

To initiate a mass update, please navigate to the new menu item Manage > OCPP parameters and create a new configuration package by clicking on the corresponding icon. A configuration package defines a set of parameters that belong to the station types you select. The total amount of configuration packages is restricted to 20 packages.

Define a configuration package

To define a configuration package, please first select a name. You can use the Description box to further explain or specify your configuration:

Next, select the manufacturer, model(s) and firmware version(s) to which the configuration package should generally apply. You can only select one manufacturer but several models and firmware versions by clicking on Add.

Please note that you do not need to specify the model(s) and firmware version(s) for a specific update but only for a general configuration setup.

The next window shows all parameters that can possibly be changed for the selected manufacturer, model(s) and firmware version(s). Select all parameters that should be configurable via the package.

Next to general parameters you can also add hidden parameters to be configured. Hidden parameters are those defined within the firmware of a specific charger but are inaccessible and unknown to the vaylens portal. Please make sure to enter the correct parameter key, otherwise an update will not be possible.

The configuration package is now created and appears in the configuration packages overview. Clicking on the configuration package opens an expand with all configuration settings: manufacturer, model(s), firmware version(s) and parameter(s). You can edit the selected parameters by clicking on Edit configuration. Please note that the manufacturer cannot be edited. If you wish to create a package for a different manufacturer, please create a new package.

Trigger a mass update

With the configuration package created you can now trigger a mass update for chargers and parameters covered by this package by clicking on the corresponding icon.

Please note that OCPP parameters will be changed! Only trained personnel should execute an update!

First, select all chargers from the list that the update is supposed to be applied on. If you selected several models and/or firmware versions for your configuration package, you can filter your list according to these criteria. For each mass update, you will be able to select the set of chargers for the rollout again.

The charger's Status indicates if a charger is available for an update. An update is not possible while a different update on this charger is in progress.

ocpp_parameters-06Next, define the parameters that you want to change with this update. Toggle all parameters you wish to update and enter the new value for each parameter. When applying a configuration package for the first time, all parameters are toggled. After a successful mass update, the last configuration will be remembered.

The number of chargers affected by each parameter might differ as not every parameter may exist on every charger.

Initiate the update with Start update.
To improve performance and avoid unnecessary restarts, only parameters that differ from those on the charger will be updated.

It is not possible to edit a configuration package or trigger a new mass update while an update is in progress.

Monitor your mass update

The Update history tab provides you with a list of recently carried out updates including date, time, retry counts, the number of affected chargers and the overall update status. Expanding a table entry shows further details on the update status. Go to the Info tab to see all parameters that have been changed.

Go to the Charging stations tab to see all chargers that the update has been rolled out on.

If some chargers have not completed a successful update, you can roll out the same configuration again to the failed chargers from the History tab. This option is not available for edited packages.
